Gay Australian diver who took home gold at the Olympics largely neglected by NBC’s coverage

Matthew Mitcham, an Austrailian diver, received a gold medal in what many were calling a come-from-behind victory at the games in Bejing.  Due to anxiety and depression, he almost did not compete in the games, and only when convinced by his coach he began to train.  On top of that, he came out as gay only 6 months prior to the games, and upset China’s dominance in the sport.

NBC didn’t find any of this Olympic heroism to be newsworthy enough, and neglected any coverage of the ceremony or his personal story of strife.

AfterElton.com wasn’t too happy:

While the issue has been addressed and debated by various blogs and writers, until we contacted NBC they were unaware of the controversy. “I’m not aware of any controversy,” said Hughes. “Yours is the first call.”

When asked why at no point during the coverage did NBC mention Mitcham was gay or that his partner was in the stands, Hughes said, “In virtually every case, we don’t discuss an athlete’s sexual orientation.”

When it was pointed out that in fact the network does exactly that by telling viewers about Olympic athletes’ various spouses, boyfriends, girlfriends, and even in one case a heterosexual “love triangle” Hughes responded, “Not in every case. Not every athlete has a personal discussion. I could show you 500 athletes we didn’t show. We don’t show everyone. We don’t show every ceremony.”

NBC Olympic’s president, Gary Zenkel, responded to AfterElton with this:

“We regret that we missed the opportunity to tell Matthew Mitcham’s story. We apologize for this unintentional omission.”

Bear sightings on campus

This was delivered to my school email this morning:

During the past week, several people on campus have reported seeing a bear and a bear cub in the area of the Nature Preserve. People should remain alert while walking in the woods.

There is no cause for alarm.

Bears are docile by nature and tend to avoid contact with people. The Department of Environmental Conservation recommends that anyone who encounters a bear should remain calm and slowly leave the area in the direction they came from.

Do not run, as this may startle the bear. Any sightings of a bear on campus should be reported to the University Police at 777-2393 or 911 from an on-campus phone.

Watch out for ‘em!

Kanye West to concertgoers: Don’t use gay slurs

Kanye West spoke his mind at one of his shows recently, criticized the anti-gay slurs and homophobia that often goes unchecked in hip-hop and rap.

“Open your fucking minds. Open your minds. Be accepting of different people and let people be who they are. You know how many people came to me calling me gay cause I wear my jeans the fresh way? Or because I said hey, dude, how you gonna say ‘fag’ right in front of a gay dude’s face and act like that’s ok. That shit is disrespectful. Coming from Chicago, where if you saw somebody that was gay you were supppoed to stay ten feet away. It should be time to break out of the intuitions that I was sayin’, the stereotypes, or the fear, the backlash that I would get if you don’t believe in what I believe in, acceptin’ people for who they are…they’re very talented and if they do something special in the world and they’re discriminated. I’ve flown across the world y’all, and I’ve come back here to tell you — open your minds and live a happier life…”
