Social scientists have noted that one thing that makes Americans distinctive is our high level of religiosity relative to other rich-world populations. Among 27 countries commonly seen as part of the developed world, the median proportion of those who say religion is important in their daily lives is just 38%. From this perspective, the fact two-thirds of Americans respond this way makes us look extremely devout.
After feeling heat from international press and angry Olympic moms fans, Sheriff Leon Lott of the Richland County Sheriff’s department is pursuing the case against Michael Phelps’ weed smokin’.
Lott says the picture indicated a law was being broken in his jurisdiction. He said he couldn’t ignore the violation just because Phelps is rich and famous.
We’ve now learned that since investigators began trying to build a case, they’ve made eight arrests: seven for drug possession and one for distribution. These are arrests that resulted as the sheriff’s department served search warrants.
Weed-smokers across the nation have banded together in a display of ambivalence and acute hunger to ignore this worthless media-fueled witch hunt, and instead smoke up more and order Taco Bell.
