Photographer and friend of Harvey Milk, Dan Nicoletta recently went through his personal archives for eastvillageboys.com (site NSFW) to share some less-publicized photos and stories. Some of the scenes in the photos may look familiar to those who have seen the recent (and Oscar-nominated) Gus Van Sant film. The captions are from the collection of photographs, by Dan Nicoletta.

"San Francisco Gay Freedom Day parade, June 1980, from then Mayor Feinstein’s balcony. (1982 brought the addition of “Lesbian” to the name of the event, and 1997 saw the addition of “Bisexuals” and “Transgender”.)"

" The legendary North Beach Black Cat Bar performer Jose Sarria, Supervisor Harvey Milk and beloved drag Diva Mavis at the Emperor and Empress Coronation Drag Ball, October 28, 1978."
