Ithaca same-sex couples still hoping for NY marriage

Some couples that sued the city of Ithaca in 2004 for the right to marry have chosen to stay in Ithaca, hoping that same-sex marriage will soon be legal in NY state:

“Some people had considered going to California, when it was legal there briefly,” Hungerford said. “Some have gone to Canada. But the majority of the couples I have kept in touch with continue to wait for it to be legal in New York.”

Chinese protesters stage mock wedding

couple_1_cs_20090216031906A small group of gay rights advocates and protesters gathered to pose for wedding pictures on Qianmen Avenue in Bejing this past Valentines day.  Two men and two women walked as gay couples, while crowds of onlookers gathered, asking questions and voicing their opinions.

Reactions to the protest were divided; while many onlookers expressed support, saying they were aware there are many openly gay men and women in China now, others were not sympathetic to the cause. On the Internet, thousands of people who responded to news stories about the event (in Chinese here) were divided as well. One person responded to a news story on the protest by asking women not to date other women anymore. “Make some contributions to the tens of millions of single males [in China],” this person wrote, alluding to China’s current gender imbalance.

Friend of Harvey Milk reveals photographs of 1970s Castro

Photographer and friend of Harvey Milk, Dan Nicoletta recently went through his personal archives for eastvillageboys.com (site NSFW) to share some less-publicized photos and stories. Some of the scenes in the photos may look familiar to those who have seen the recent (and Oscar-nominated) Gus Van Sant film.  The captions are from the collection of photographs, by Dan Nicoletta.
