Binghamton theatre to feature play on persecution of gays during WWII

n617102455_1664011_2956Directed by Tim Mollen

Original music by Santino DeAngelo

BENT revolves around the escalating persecution of gay men by Germany’s Third Reich before and during World War II. We meet the central character of Max, who has been living an exciting and carefree life in the heart of Berlin’s vibrant and libertarian gay subculture. As the fascist government begins to round up, imprison and kill gays, a fateful mistake leads to Max’s flight, his capture, and his rail car journey to the concentration camp at Dachau. The story of his existence there, and the love that transcends it, makes for an amazingly powerful human drama.

Gay Australian diver who took home gold at the Olympics largely neglected by NBC’s coverage

Matthew Mitcham, an Austrailian diver, received a gold medal in what many were calling a come-from-behind victory at the games in Bejing.  Due to anxiety and depression, he almost did not compete in the games, and only when convinced by his coach he began to train.  On top of that, he came out as gay only 6 months prior to the games, and upset China’s dominance in the sport.

NBC didn’t find any of this Olympic heroism to be newsworthy enough, and neglected any coverage of the ceremony or his personal story of strife.

AfterElton.com wasn’t too happy:

While the issue has been addressed and debated by various blogs and writers, until we contacted NBC they were unaware of the controversy. “I’m not aware of any controversy,” said Hughes. “Yours is the first call.”

When asked why at no point during the coverage did NBC mention Mitcham was gay or that his partner was in the stands, Hughes said, “In virtually every case, we don’t discuss an athlete’s sexual orientation.”

When it was pointed out that in fact the network does exactly that by telling viewers about Olympic athletes’ various spouses, boyfriends, girlfriends, and even in one case a heterosexual “love triangle” Hughes responded, “Not in every case. Not every athlete has a personal discussion. I could show you 500 athletes we didn’t show. We don’t show everyone. We don’t show every ceremony.”

NBC Olympic’s president, Gary Zenkel, responded to AfterElton with this:

“We regret that we missed the opportunity to tell Matthew Mitcham’s story. We apologize for this unintentional omission.”

Bear sightings on campus

This was delivered to my school email this morning:

During the past week, several people on campus have reported seeing a bear and a bear cub in the area of the Nature Preserve. People should remain alert while walking in the woods.

There is no cause for alarm.

Bears are docile by nature and tend to avoid contact with people. The Department of Environmental Conservation recommends that anyone who encounters a bear should remain calm and slowly leave the area in the direction they came from.

Do not run, as this may startle the bear. Any sightings of a bear on campus should be reported to the University Police at 777-2393 or 911 from an on-campus phone.

Watch out for ‘em!

HIV rate rises among young men

Young gay men have seen an increase this year of 12 percent in new HIV infections.  The rise was particularly visible in young African American men.  The increase is suspected to be attributed to the lack of awareness and fear in the current generation about AIDS and its effects:

‘The double-digit increase in young gay men is about 10 times higher than in the homosexual community overall, where the number of new infections is going up about 1.5 percent a year.

The report, released yesterday by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, appears to confirm impressions that a “second-wave” AIDS epidemic is underway in gay America.

“These men represent a new generation that has not been personally affected by AIDS in the same way that their older peers were,” said Richard Wolitski, acting director of HIV-AIDS prevention at CDC.’

The real story behind Vivienne Westwood’s bear model and collection

Vivienne Westwood\'s bear models. More correctly described as \

I was talking to a friend of mine from Spain today, remarking to him about the extraordinary amount of hits that the blog received based on the story of Sergio Lo Re, the muscle-bear model whose appearance on the runway in Milan has confused and intrigued a bunch of blogs and bear lovers alike.

So what’s the deal? My Spanish friend tells me it’s not some anti-skinny statement, nor a daddybear fetish manifesting itself on the runway.  Vivienne Westwood showed this collection, with these specific models, in Milan, for political controversy. Apparently the local Italian politicos are very unhappy too. (I did my best to translate from Spanish, from Elpais.com):

On the runway there was a string of darker-skinned men, like a scenic voyage between Roma and Macedonia, and it has caused controversy in Italy, a country whose government has commanded power over the massive “gitano” or gypsy immigrant presence.  Silvio Berlusconi has given extraordinary powers to the governmental delegates of Rome, Milan, and Naples to resolve the “gypsy crisis.”  The ordinance allows the commissaries to “census, rehouse, relocate, or expel” the ethnic gypsies by “administrative or judicial means.”

Vivienne Westwood’s collection was a poignant statement to all that have feared those who are different, and justify such discrimination.  It attempted to change fashion from something superficial into a forum for debate, and used it to raise awareness of social issues.  “My collection is a tribute to a little-understood population,” she tersely explained. . . .

. . . The idea hasn’t pleased Tiziana Maiolo, a government councillor of Milan, in Berlusconi’s party.  “I believe that the designer has an idea of the Romas that does not correspond with reality.  If she wants, I can accompany her to a (gypsy) camp,” he said.  “She is misinformed, the Romas are people that don’t want to go to work and send their kids to peddle for money or rob people. I tried to incorporate them in my years here, but in the end, I had to understand that these people want to live without respect for the law.  If it’s like this, they need to leave our cities,” he concluded.”

What I did not know, and what the American media has failed to see about this mystery bear is that it wasn’t a singular instance of artistic rebellion, or edginess, as much as it was a brazen, ironic political statement about the treatment of gypsies in Italian cities.

What my spanish friend told me was this (in Spanish.. again translated): “The designer wanted to protest against the decisions of the new government of Berlusconi that wants to kick out the gypsies (often from Romania, and sometimes illegal immigrants, but ultimately are of the EU) from Italy. European governments and their citizens have protested this, and Westwood, in the middle of the biggest event in Milan, presented her own protest.”

So the bear is there for political reasons, you might say.  The tattoos, the chains, the clothing, and the gold teeth, all represent something more than a fashion statement–

They are reminiscent of the gypsy population that is actively being expunged of Italy.  Clearly, Westwood has sympathy for these people and chose a path of irony to articulate her sentiments.

Thanks to Dídac for the help.  Article from Elpais.com

UPDATE: It seems some English media outlets have picked up on the story–

“Italians have launched a series of xenophobic attacks against immigrants in recent months, who they blame for much of the crime in the country, and a class of Naples primary school children shocked Europe recently by submitting homework backing the burning of gypsy camps.”

Also, Westwood gave an interview with a radio station:Interviewed on FashionFM, an Italian radio show and website, Westwood acknowledged that the menswear collection, designed for the most part by her husband Andreas Kronthaler, was intended to make people think about their ethics. During the interview Westwood insisted fashion is a cultural and artistic force that has the power to challenge people’s prejudices. “It’s not enough to say, `I’m open-minded,’” she said. “People need to think for themselves. We need a different ethic.”

GLAAD responds to defamatory statements on FX’s show “30 Days”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_3nf2Tz6Q0]
In theory, the idea of Morgan Spurlock (of Supersize Me fame) using 30 days to teach a lesson in tolerance sounds useful.  A woman who opposes the idea of LGBT rights lives with a gay family for 30 days, and at the end we see if her mentality has changed.

However, the episode’s premiere last night exhibited a far more biased, and at best, irresponsible representation of facts, and the differences (or rather, lack of differences) between gay parents and straight parents.

The episode features a defamatory interview with Peter Sprigg of the notoriously homophobic Family Research Council.  Says Sprigg: “Homosexuality is associated with higher rates of sexual promiscuity, sexually transmitted diseases, mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence, and child sexual abuse, and those are all reasons for us to be concerned about placing children into that kind of setting.”

GLAAD has responded with a pithy statement regarding the episode:

Regrettably, the episode also features a defamatory statement by Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council, an anti-gay activist organization, who claims: “Homosexuality is associated with higher rates of sexual promiscuity, sexually transmitted diseases, mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence, and child sexual abuse, and those are all reasons for us to be concerned about placing children into that kind of setting.” While there is no credible scientific research that backs Sprigg’s claim—and much that disputes it—the episodepresents his assertion as if it were fact and offers no credible social science experts or child health authorities to challenge Sprigg’s assertion. Indeed, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychological Association, the Child Welfare League of America, and many other child health and social services authorities who support parenting by qualified lesbian and gay parents dispute Sprigg’s claim.
