D.C. Bush-haters throw more shoes at W

Several hundred people gathered yesterday in in DuPont Circle, D.C. to throw shoes at a large inflatable George W. Bush.  A sign reading “Give Bush the boot” hung from the figure while onlookers tossed various types of footwear.  Over 1,000 pairs of shoes were donated for the event. From Nymag.com:

There were various methods of attack: Some tied laces together and try to get the shoes to hook on the outgoing president’s nose. Others threw the shoes too hard and sent passersby scattering, arms covering their heads. A group of effete French youths threw with all their might but couldn’t even get the shoes near the doll.

Budapest gay pride march met with protests, violence

Thousands of LGBT rights supporters marched in Budapest on Saturday, amid dozens of protesters who threw stones and eggs. By the end of the march, 49 were arrested and 10 injured.

The marchers came prepared for the backlash, wearing black plastic raincoats and donning rainbow umbrellas to deflect projectiles.

Police used tear gas and water cannons to disrupt violent protestors.

Local politicians were present as well, including Katalin Levai, a member of the European Parliament for the Hungarian Socialist Party, and Gabor Szetey, a former state secretary, who last year became the first government official to announce he was gay.
